The Operation

I spoke to Grace on the telephone the night before the operation, and our conversation almost killed me. It was obvious that she was very concerned, and she choked up a number of times during the conversation. I assured her that I would be fine, and that I had a great team of surgeons and she lamented that, “If her situation was different that she would leave Connecticut and be by my side during the operation.”

I took her concern as much more than just a boss-employee relationship, and I felt an emotional glow inside of me when we finally hung up the telephone. For the first time in all of years together, I thought that perhaps Grace might care for me more than just her boss or a close friend. Going into what I faced, it gave me hope, and it gave me joy.

I promised to update everyone when I could, but honestly, I only had Art to handle that task. I doubted that I would be in a talking mood after the operation. Art had all the numbers for Meghan, the Gibson Human Resources Department, and of course, Grace, and I knew that he would advise everyone if I made it or I croaked. I did not even bother with informing my children or my ex-wife of the operation. It had been forever since any of them called me or even sent a birthday or Christmas card. I figured that if I informed any of them of the operation and the seriousness of it that they would just rush out and take an extra life insurance policy on me in case that I croaked.

The surgery preparation thing sucked. I could not have water or food for twenty-four hours before the operation, and all I could think about was whether it was a toss-up if I wanted beer, coffee or a slice of store brand frozen pizza. I wish this would all end, and now I just waited for the good part when they were going to give me cool drugs in order to put me to sleep. Art drove me to the hospital, shook my hand, wished me luck, and dropped me off. I made my way to the check-in office and sat with the nurse and medical worker. They both looked at me rather strangely when they asked me whom they should inform of my status after the operation, and I gave them Art’s contact information as a local contact, and Grace’s information as a backup.

“Is Art your friend, relative, or maybe even your step-brother?” They asked.

“No, he is my employee, and he is a helluva good one too.”

“Oh, okay. This Grace Stroinski—is she here?”

“No, she is my assistant in our home office in New York City.”

“Is anyone waiting for you here in the waiting room?”

“No. I have no one waiting here. Just Art is local, but he has to work. We have a difficult project schedule to maintain at work and with me going down and out, Art is the man.
